Richelieu - Chambly à Sorel sur la rivière Lawerence St

Blue Willow Waiting for Lock #9 to Open

Okay, enough of that.....
We are in there somewhere

After departing Burlington we made the trek up the northern portion of Lk Champlain to Rouses Pt. which is just below the Canadian border.  Very nice marina, and, (I think) 100% Canadian slip holders.  There was french being spoken everywhere, but we made conversation with a  couple of folks.  Their broken english seemed to be no major barrier.

The next morning, we cast the lines and headed to the Canadian Border.  Two rather young border agents made the inspections of the Blue Willow, all was fine.  We had no NEXUS card, or CanPass, and our crossing took maybe 10 minutes.

Lock #9

Bridge just before Lock #9
Loved this home.
It had mortar that matched the roof color.

Our destination was Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu at Lock 9.  As you head north to Sorel Canada, the Richelieu River has a significant portion that is a canal, which is called Chambly Canal.
Tight in some places

Many Bridges of all types

Are the right arrows for us?

There is a huge counter weight
hidden by the tree

Tighter

There are nine locks, and many bridges.  Some bridges are non functional, others are left open, the remaining bridges need to be opened.  The rapids in the river, are too shallow and swift for any large boat, thus the canal.  We purchased a season pass for all of Canada's Locks, and Moorings.  We stayed at the lock 9 wall area above the lock.

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is a very nice community, with nice parks, sitting areas, and an active community.  We saw so may joggers, bicyclists,  fishermen, frisbee players, etc etc it was contagious. I went for a nice bike ride, and it was fun.

Step Locks 1-2-3
Evening at the step locks

Lock 9 is the only electro-mechanically operated lock in the Richelieu system.  All the others are manually operated, and are VERY COOL.   Nice to see the youthful college kids scurry about opening valves, and gates, catching lines etc.  The system is very efficient.  The Canadian Parks staff could not be nicer, or more helpful.  Locks 1-2-3 are step locks,  The exit gate of #3 is the entrance gate of lock #2 etc.  We had fun going through.

The winds were up when we entered Lock 1-2-3, but we had no issues.  We decided to catch a marina, and get things cleaned up and reprovision.

Vermont - Vergennes (Met a real Pirate) and Burlington

The Clear Waters of Lake Champlain
Allow the Sun to shine below a Sailboat

Pure White Water Falls

After departing Whitehall, we made our way up the southern portion of Lake Champlain.  The sky was filled with grey clouds.  It did not take long for the clouds to produce a light rain.  We were traveling with Seahorse.  We elected to make the 8 mile trip up Otter Creek to Vergennes. Glad we did. As it has been raining here off and on for over  two weeks, the waters levels were up over three feet.
Our location at Vergennes

What a beautiful view from a secluded free dock, near the Otter Creek Falls, in downtown Vergennes.  The roar from the falls could be heard at all times.  Many locals stopped by to see the solid white water falls, instead of the water falls with rocks showing.  We walked UPHILL to the town and it was a very nice village, with boutique shops, etc.  We spent some time cleaning Blue Willow, as we have neglected her for too long.  Nice to get her cleaned up some.  I cleaned the area at the water line.  The next morning, to my dismay, the 'soap suds' created from the falls and laden with silt/mud accumulated to a height over a foot along the water line of the boat, causing a dirty mess.
While at Vergennes, we saw newly weds fishing.
Boat Building Forms

In the park, at the free dock, there were some marble forms and/or fixtures for boat building. The forms had groves for the frame members and side planking, and of course they located the keel etc.  These were really nice pieces from the local boat building history.
Thought I was dreaming

The bride and groom still in their formal wear, were bass fishing at 6:30 AM!

We met a real Pirate.  He told us so.  We were working on the boat, when a six year old kid, filled               with a gift to talk, showed up, announcing that he was a Pirate.  Okay.  He then ran home, and proudly appeared with his pirate hat on.  I told him that I liked his hat a lot, and he did look like a real pirate.  Then he went home and got his pirate flag.  He proceeded to tell us a story about pirates and their flags.
The Pirate of Vergennes
With his flag and wood for a raft.

Next the Pirate went home and found his 4x4x6 inch, hand decorated (wish I had a picture) Treasure Chest, filled with  Doubloons, beads, and real coins from Canada.  We looked it over, and it was a beauty, that he was very proud of.  Vicki, then remembered that we had a necklace, and a few dollar coins on the Blue Willow, she went back to the boat and proceeded to find them.  We made a big deal about the coins, and the pirate was so excited to add to his treasure chest.  He kept looking and touching his new bounty with a huge grin on his face.  As we talked further, he showed me his pile of wood, that we intended to make into a raft.  I asked him, how much rope he had to tie it together.  He replied, while looking at Blue Willow.... "I do not have any rope, but I need some", he then proceeded to say his mom is going to get him some soon.  Before he departed for the night, he went looking for a goose feather.  He found one, and then ran back to the boat.  He said to Vicki, while handing the goose feather to her "This is all I got to say thanks".  Vicki and I melted.  The next day, we wondered if the Pirate was going to show.  Yes he did, in the afternoon.
Ready to take on the seas.

Wearing his hat, carrying his flag and now carrying his prized Pirates Sword.  He was all smiles.  We talked further about his raft plan, while gathering sticks and small logs. The next morning, as we were departing, the Pirate showed up.  He asked if we could come back next week.  I said maybe, I then thanked him for being a friend.  He then walked down the dock, as close to us as possible,  constantly waving good-by as we departed.  What a Pirate.

Lighthouse on Lk Champlain

We motored down Otter Creek back to Lake Champlain.  There were grey skies again, and we made our way to Burlington VT.

Blue Willow with the Adirondacks in the background

What a great City.  Sitting between the Adirondacks Mountains of New York and the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the very clear waters of Lake Champlain, this is a wonderful place that we instantly, fell in love with.  Awesome.  Vermont University is located here.  It is easy to see the youthful energy in everything here.  Many sport shops, ski shops, everything GMO free, Vegan,  etc, and many of what I call (the free spirited) Kool-Aid Kids (colored hair).  The parks, waterfront, bike trails, and many visitors make for an active city.  The sunsets were beautiful.
University of Vermont

I would call this a Hockey Barn

I toured the university by bike, and it is a beautiful campus.  Many old good looking buildings, and very clean and landscaped real well.  I stopped to look in a few buildings, and the Ice Rink (not Ice Arena).  The Ice rink was awesome.  The rounded wood ceiling, wood bleachers, wood floors made for a great venue for Ice Hockey.  Vermont has had some good years in Ice Hockey.

Champlain Canal

We traveled further up the Hudson River, and then it turns into the Champlain Canal.  This is a beautiful part of the country.  Many Loopers do not take this route due to the CnO Railroad bridge  which is at 17 ft.  As luck would have it the rains were nonstop north of Waterford the night before we departed (including tornado warnings, high winds etc).  If you are traveling up the Champlain canal system, expecting a clearance under the 17 foot bridge, after the rains came flooding the pool of water that goes under the bridge.  Take action.  Due to the rains, the clearance is, somewhere near  say 16  feet (which is what I need to clear).  What do you do?    You can call the dam and lock upstream and have the pool lowered.   YUP,  you read it correct.  We needed the pool lowered so that we can clear that bridge.
Boating Buddy Seahorse
......and..... exhale!
Clearance was okay due
 to lowering of the pool
When they do this they actually drop the pool by two feet.  As we approached the dam and lock upstream from this bridge, we heard a lot of chatter on the radio.  People were asking why so much water was let go, causing a lot of turbulence, and thus many boats were all over the place trying to gain control of their boat, in the rapids (including us).
Locking through the Champlain Canal

The Canal valley is very beautiful.  It was so peaceful, quiet, many birds chirping, and the sky was calm, and the winds were minimal.  Very nice trip.

Half way between Waterford and Whitehall we stayed at a free wall in Fort Edward.  Very nice entry and exit, free water and electric. Nice.
The Skene Manor stands proud
over Whitehall NY.

As we neared Whitehall, we saw the majestic Skene Manor high on the bluffs.  Beautiful.  I made my mind up right away, that I was going to see it up close.  Well, we did.  As it was sunday, it was open for tours.  We made the trek up the hill via car.    We walked down, the steep roads back to the boat.

Having desert

The tour was free with a purchase, and desert was $4 per serving, well that is easy.... lets have desert!  The tour was fantastic, and our docent was REALLY into the tour.  I went up an optional  narrow stairwell to the very top window.  What a sight from up there.  We walked down, the steep roads back to the boat. More of the history can be read here CLICK.

Great ending to a great day
with Lynn

We stayed at Whitehall Marina (with an attached restaurant) The new owner, Lynn, was a superb host,  He made Vicki, myself, Dan n Angie (from Seahorse) shrimp  appetizers, personalized dinner, with salad and many drinks.  A bit later, Lynn joined us for dinner.  The restaurant was closed, while waiting for a permit, so we had the entire place to ourselves, and we all had a superb time.   Lynn is a former world class APBA boat racer (offshore), and was the former owner of Hacker-Craft Boats.  What a great guy, many talents, great personality.

Whitehall has a rich historical background, and the village is showing its age, but it is still such a nice place to visit.
