Trent Severn Water Way

Entry to the Trent Severn Waterway

The Trent-Severn  (TS) Water Way is simply an awesome area to visit by boat.  It has so many attributes.  Located on the southern end at Port of Trenton on Lake Ontario and traversing north and west 240.6 miles to Port of Severn located on Georgian Bay (which is part of Lake Huron).

The TS has 45 locks.  Thirty six locks are conventional, there are two flight locks, two of the tallest hydraulic lift locks, and one amazing rail lock. From Trenton to lock 36 at Kirkfield it is a rising lock, from Kirkfield to Severn it is a lowering lock.  Many locks have walls for mooring, and a few have water, most have washrooms, three have hydro (electricity), and many are located near a village or small city, and several are 100% remote.  There are full service marinas, resorts, pump-out systems, mooring areas, anchorages etc all along the TS.

I have said many times that the Lock Operators are fantastic.....  Look below at this sequence of pics.  Daisy learned quickly that those uniforms 'usually' mean a treat.
Again, these folks are superb representatives of Parks Canada.

We attended a 'Beatles' concert
We sang non-stop 2.5 hours
Their name was Day Trippers
Go see them if you get a chance.

It was very hot, and we had no electric,
Thus no AC.
We took Daisy to the restaurant,
but she had to be caged

Later for Ice Cream, there was
a Dog Room for dogs.
She was bouncing to see us non-stop

The interconnecting lakes in rivers along the Trent-Severn is amazing.  The cottages and sometimes their boat houses are just beautiful.  The warm waters are clear and inviting to swim in.  Many of the lakes are quite large.  Lake Simcoe for example, is a very large lake (look at a map, and compare the size).  This world famous water destination is a very special place.

Champlain in 1615, was the first european to visit the area.  He  found many cleared areas from the wars between the Hurons and the Mohawks fueled by the growing fur trade.  First settlers along the TS were from Britain and Ireland.  The rivers were harnessed for power for many mill towns.  Expansion ensued along and around the TS due to timber, farming, and merchants and commercial travelers need to move product through the TS.
In 1920, after almost a century of construction, the TS linkages of locks, 50 man-made canals, 150 dams, countless areas of dredging, flooding, created a fully navigable system.  Soon thereafter, a flow of recreational boaters arrived, and the system has grown in popularity since.

The TS was an awesome waterway.
